Conjunctivitis has several causes, and proper treatment depends entirely on identifying the right one. Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious and usually resolves on its own. What is conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is inflammation of the conjunctiva — the thin, clear tissue that covers the white of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid. It causes redness, swelling, discharge, itching, and a gritty sensation.

What causes conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis can be caused by viruses (most common, often with a cold), bacteria, allergens such as pollen or pet dander, irritants like smoke or chlorine, and in some cases contact lens problems. Identifying the exact cause is essential to choosing the right treatment.

Is conjunctivitis contagious?

Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are highly contagious and spread through direct contact, shared towels, or contaminated surfaces. Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious. Frequent handwashing and avoiding eye-touching are key to preventing spread.

What treatments are available for conjunctivitis?

Treatment depends on the cause. Viral cases often resolve with supportive care and cool compresses. Bacterial cases are treated with antibiotic drops or ointments. Allergic cases respond to antihistamine and mast-cell stabilizer drops. Dr. Ozerov tailors treatment to the diagnosis.

How long does pink eye last?

Viral conjunctivitis usually lasts 7 to 14 days. Bacterial conjunctivitis often improves within a few days of starting antibiotics. Allergic conjunctivitis lasts as long as exposure to the allergen continues but improves quickly with proper treatment.

Can conjunctivitis cause complications?

Most cases resolve without complications, but untreated or severe cases — especially certain viral or bacterial infections — can lead to corneal involvement, scarring, or vision problems. Early evaluation prevents these outcomes.
