A stye (hordeolum) is a small, painful, red bump caused by a bacterial infection of an eyelash follicle or eyelid gland. A chalazion is a firm, usually painless lump that forms when a meibomian (oil) gland becomes blocked. Although they look similar, they require different treatment approaches.

What is a stye?

A stye, medically called a hordeolum, is a red, tender, pimple-like bump on or near the edge of the eyelid. It is caused by a bacterial infection — usually staphylococcus — in an eyelash follicle or eyelid gland.

What is a chalazion?

A chalazion is a firm, slow-growing lump in the eyelid caused by a blocked meibomian oil gland. Unlike a stye, it is usually not painful and tends to develop more gradually.

What’s the difference between a stye and a chalazion?

Styes are typically painful, red, and located near the lash line. Chalazia are firmer, deeper, and usually painless. Sometimes a stye that does not fully resolve becomes a chalazion. Treatment differs, so proper diagnosis matters.

Are they contagious?

Styes are caused by bacteria already living on the skin and are not considered highly contagious, but the bacteria can spread through close contact, shared towels, or eye makeup. Chalazia are not contagious.

How are styes and chalazia treated?

First-line treatment usually includes warm compresses several times a day, gentle lid hygiene, and sometimes topical antibiotic ointments. Persistent chalazia may need a steroid injection or a minor in-office incision-and-drainage procedure.

Can they come back?

Yes — especially in patients with blepharitis, dry eye, or meibomian gland dysfunction. Treating these underlying conditions is the key to preventing recurrence.

When should I see a doctor?
