AMD affects the ability to see fine detail, recognize faces, read, drive, and perform tasks that require central vision. There are two main forms: dry AMD, which progresses slowly and is the most common form, and wet AMD, which is less common but can cause rapid central vision loss due to abnormal blood vessel growth.

Comprehensive Macular Exam

We perform a full dilated retinal exam focused on the macula, looking for drusen, pigment changes, and signs of wet AMD.

What is age-related macular degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic disease that damages the macula — the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It causes blurriness or blank spots in central vision while peripheral vision typically remains intact.

What are the types of AMD?

There are two types. Dry AMD, the most common form, develops slowly as drusen (yellow deposits) accumulate beneath the retina. Wet AMD is less common but more severe, caused by abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina that leak fluid or blood.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include blurry or distorted central vision, difficulty reading or recognizing faces, straight lines appearing wavy, dark or blank spots in the center of vision, and the need for brighter light when reading. Peripheral vision usually remains normal.

Who is at risk for AMD?

Risk factors include age over 50, family history, smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, cardiovascular disease, light eye color, prolonged sun exposure, and a diet low in leafy greens and omega-3 fatty acids.

How is AMD diagnosed?

Diagnosis includes a dilated retinal exam, optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus photography, and sometimes fluorescein angiography. The Amsler grid is also used as a home monitoring tool to detect changes.

How is AMD treated?

Dry AMD is managed with lifestyle changes, AREDS2 vitamin supplementation, and close monitoring. Wet AMD is treated with anti-VEGF injections (such as Avastin, Eylea, or Lucentis) that reduce abnormal blood vessel growth and preserve vision.

Can AMD be prevented?

AMD cannot be fully prevented, but the risk can be lowered through not smoking, controlling blood pressure, eating a diet rich in leafy greens and fish, exercising regularly, protecting eyes from UV light, and getting routine eye exams.
